Cómo valoramos cada producto

Bitdefender is the antivirus that tops most lab tables and most "best antivirus" lists, and it is also the one with a long trail of angry renewal complaints. A useful Bitdefender review has to hold both facts at once. This one draws on CNET's week-long test and full price ladder, PCMag's Antivirus Plus review, Tom's Guide's test of Ultimate Security, Cybernews' in-house malware and phishing runs, the latest AV-TEST and AV-Comparatives results, and the customer reviews collected by ConsumerAffairs, to answer whether Bitdefender is worth paying for, which plan to buy, and what to watch for at renewal.

Verdict in short: Bitdefender is one of the best Windows and Mac antivirus suites you can buy, with near-perfect lab scores, light scans and a deep set of extras. Buy it on a first-year discount, set a reminder before renewal, and use a separate VPN, because Bitdefender's own VPN is the weak link.

What Bitdefender is

Bitdefender is a Romanian cybersecurity company selling consumer antivirus suites, small-business bundles and the GravityZone enterprise platform. CNET describes a company that started in antivirus and now sells suites with safe browsing, dark web monitoring and data-broker removal. The brand's own site splits the range into consumer, small business and enterprise, and its 2026 launches include an AI Guardian layer aimed at autonomous AI agents.

Pricing

Bitdefender's list prices are high and its first-year prices are much lower, so the renewal figure is the one to budget for. CNET lists Antivirus Plus at $30 for the first year and $70 after, covering three devices; Premium Security at $80 for the first year and $130 after for five devices; Ultimate Security at $90 then $160; Ultimate Security Plus at $120 then $190; and Ultimate Security Plus Extended at $140 then $250. Family versions stretch coverage to 25 devices across five accounts.

Other outlets quote list prices instead. PCMag prices Antivirus Plus at $49.99 a year for one license and $69.99 for three, on the high side against competitors near $40, while Tom's Guide lists Total Security at $109, Premium Security at $129, Ultimate Security at $159 and Ultimate Security Plus at $189. Cybernews confirms a 30-day free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee on paid plans.

Malware protection: lab results

The independent labs are close to unanimous. Cybernews reports that Bitdefender blocked 100% of threats in AV-TEST's January–February 2026 round and earned 6/6 for protection, performance and usability, and that AV-Comparatives gave it Advanced+ with a 99.94% online protection rate and 4 false alarms. Tom's Guide adds an AAA rating from SE Labs, and PCMag calculates an aggregate lab score of 9.6 across four labs, just behind Norton's perfect 10.

Hands-on tests: good, not perfect

The testers' own malware collections are less flattering. Cybernews detected 134 of 150 samples, an 89.33% rate, and blocked 18 of 20 malicious links, while PCMag found it detected 90% of its samples for 8.6 points, the lowest among the apps it tested, but scored 100% on phishing detection and stopped 11 of 12 ransomware samples outright. Both reviewers weight the lab results more heavily, and so do we.

Performance impact

Scans are light on resources in most tests. CNET measured 7% to 10% CPU during system scans and a repeat scan in three minutes, against Malwarebytes' 30. Cybernews saw a heavier 29% to 100% CPU during a full scan, and PCMag's first full scan took 189 minutes before dropping to 9.5 minutes on a repeat as Bitdefender learned the files. Tom's Guide notes AV-Comparatives' system-impact score of 85/100, behind McAfee.

Features beyond antivirus

Even the entry plan behaves like a suite. PCMag highlights multi-layered ransomware protection that restores encrypted files, the Safepay hardened browser for banking, an anti-tracking extension and a scan for missing security patches. Higher tiers add a firewall, parental controls, webcam protection, a password manager and anti-theft tools, and Ultimate bundles identity theft protection with continuous dark web monitoring and data-broker removal, which CNET found effective.

Bitdefender's VPN is where reviewers agree it falls short. PCMag explains that it is licensed from IPVanish with servers in 112 countries, but full access needs a separate subscription on lower tiers; CNET found it caused a major drop in internet speed and lacked key privacy features, and recommends a standalone VPN. If privacy matters, pair Bitdefender with a dedicated service such as the one in our Surfshark review.

Free version and trial

The free edition covers core malware scanning on Windows only. Cybernews points out there is no free Mac plan, but a 30-day trial applies to every plan and device without a credit card. That trial is the sensible way to test the interface and scan speed on your own machine before paying.

Renewals, billing and customer complaints

This is the part the editor reviews underplay. ConsumerAffairs shows 1.7 stars from 183 customer reviews, with 76% one-star, and the complaints cluster around auto-renewal at full price, refunds refused outside the window, subscriptions ending early, and slow support. CNET's own testing praised Bitdefender's phone support but found the AI-first live chat made reaching a human difficult. Turn off auto-renew after buying, note the renewal date, and expect to negotiate or switch rather than pay list price.

Security & data

Bitdefender is based in Romania, inside the EU, not Russia. CNET rates its privacy protocols above average for the category, and the suites run locally with cloud-assisted scanning. As with any antivirus, it sees a lot of your system, so buy directly from Bitdefender or a major retailer and keep your account protected with two-factor sign-in.

Which Bitdefender plan should you buy?

The plan ladder is confusing because every tier adds a little more, so it helps to start from what you actually need. If you only use one Windows laptop and never bank or shop on public Wi-Fi, the free edition plus careful browsing is a reasonable floor, and Antivirus Plus is the cheapest way to add ransomware recovery, Safepay and the phishing filter that testers rate so highly.

If your household mixes Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone, the suites are where Bitdefender makes sense. Premium Security is the sweet spot for most people: it covers every platform, adds the password manager and the firewall, and keeps the per-device price reasonable on a first-year deal. Ultimate Security only earns its premium if you want the identity theft protection and dark web monitoring bundled in rather than bought separately, or if you will genuinely use the unlimited VPN despite its speed problems.

Families with teenagers and lots of devices should look at the family versions rather than stacking individual plans, because the individual tiers stop at five devices. Small businesses have their own bundles and the GravityZone line, which are priced and managed differently from the consumer suites and are outside the scope of this review.

Whatever you pick, the same rule applies: buy on a discount, turn off auto-renew straight away, and put the renewal date in your calendar. When it comes round, compare the renewal quote with a fresh first-year price, which is often lower, and with rival suites.

Setup and everyday use

Installation is quick and the interface is one of the cleanest in the category. Tom's Guide calls it clean and user-friendly on both desktop and mobile, CNET found installation fast and navigation intuitive, and most features run quietly in the background with Autopilot making sensible decisions so you are not bombarded with prompts. The web dashboard, Bitdefender Central, is where you manage devices, subscriptions and renewals, and it is the first place to check if a subscription looks wrong. The one niggle Tom's Guide raises is that some windows cannot be viewed full size on desktop, and the VPN on mobile lives in a separate app.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Top results across AV-TEST, AV-Comparatives and SE Labs
  • Light scans in most tests
  • Excellent phishing and ransomware protection
  • Rich extras even on the entry plan
  • Covers Windows, macOS, Android and iOS

Cons

  • Renewal prices roughly double the first year
  • Billing and refund complaints are common
  • VPN is slow and limited on lower tiers
  • Five-device cap on individual plans
  • AI-first chat support

Who it's for

Buy Bitdefender if you want the strongest malware protection with minimal slowdown, on a first-year deal, for up to five devices, and you will manage the renewal yourself. Families can step up to the family plans that cover a whole household.

Look elsewhere if you hate subscription admin, need a strong built-in VPN, or are happy with Windows' own protection. For other subscriptions where the renewal price is the real price, see our Wix review and our Notion review.

Our ratings

Overall: 4/5. Overall, Bitdefender earns four because Cybernews reports top marks from AV-TEST and AV-Comparatives and PCMag gives it an Editors' Choice, while the renewal pricing and billing complaints that ConsumerAffairs records and a weak VPN cost a full point.

Bitdefender

Bitdefender scores 4/5. Protection and performance are best in class according to CNET's testing; the subscription experience is not.

FAQ

Is Bitdefender worth it?

For protection, yes: it is consistently at the top of independent lab tests and light on system resources. It is worth it at first-year prices; at renewal, compare offers or negotiate before paying list.

Does Bitdefender have a VPN?

Yes, but a limited one on lower tiers. It is licensed from IPVanish and covers servers in 112 countries per PCMag; unlimited use needs Ultimate Security or a separate subscription, and CNET found it slow.

Is Bitdefender a Russian company?

No. Bitdefender is headquartered in Romania, an EU member state.

Does Bitdefender have a free version?

Yes, for Windows only. Cybernews notes there is no free Mac plan, but a 30-day free trial covers every paid plan without a card.

How much does Bitdefender cost per year?

Entry Antivirus Plus is $30 for the first year and $70 after per CNET, with suites from $80 to $140 in year one and higher on renewal.

Does Bitdefender slow down your computer?

Usually not much. CNET measured very light scans, though Cybernews saw high CPU during a full scan; first scans are slow and later scans much faster.

Is Bitdefender better than Windows Defender?

For most people, yes: stronger phishing protection, ransomware recovery, Safepay and extras. Microsoft Defender is free and decent, scoring 9.4 in PCMag's lab aggregate against Bitdefender's 9.6.
