Điểm của chúng tôi

Runway produces some of the most convincing short AI video clips and publishes clear plan and API pricing. Pooled credits, retries and inconsistent results keep the real cost high.

Runway, still searched by many as RunwayML, is one of the best-known AI video generators: you type a prompt or upload an image and get a short, often startlingly realistic clip. The question most buyers have is not whether the output looks good, but whether the credit system leaves enough room to get a usable shot. We read the current reviews, the plan details they quote and the complaints owners post, and worked through the numbers.

Verdict: who Runway is for

Runway is a good fit for solo creators, agencies and small studios that need short cinematic clips, b-roll, ad concepts or storyboards brought to life. It is a poor fit for teams that expect every paid seat to add credits, for anyone who needs long continuous video, and for casual users on a tight budget. The most detailed review we found, from SaaS CRM Review, calls it a strong generation layer but a weak finishing suite, and that matches what owners report.

What is Runway?

Runway (the company is Runway AI, Inc.) makes AI models and tools for video, images and audio. Its homepage splits the business into three platforms: Runway Creative, the browser-based suite most people mean by "RunwayML"; Runway Dev, an API for developers; and Runway Robotics, a simulation toolkit built on its world model. The same page says the creative suite is used by 60m+ creatives and that you can try it free and cancel anytime.

For a typical buyer, Runway Creative is the product. It bundles text-to-video and image-to-video generation, several in-house and third-party models, image generation, audio tools and a basic editor in one web workspace.

Pricing

Runway sells per editor, and every plan comes with a pool of monthly credits that generation draws down. The table uses the plan cards as quoted by SaaS CRM Review in August 2026; enterprise pricing is quoted by sales.

PlanPrice per monthLimitsFree tier
Free$0 (SaaS CRM Review)125 one-time credits, 5 GB storage, no credit purchasesYes
Standard$15 monthly, or $12 per month billed yearly (SaaS CRM Review)625 credits a month, shared by up to five editorsNo
Pro$35 monthly, or $28 per month billed yearly (SaaS CRM Review)2,250 credits a month, shared by up to 10 editorsNo
Max$95 monthly, or $76 per month billed yearly (SaaS CRM Review)9,500 credits a month, shared by up to 10 editorsNo

Three things matter more than the sticker price:

  • Credits are pooled, not per seat. SaaS CRM Review points out that five editors on Standard pay five times the seat price but still share the same 625 credits. Adding people adds cost, not capacity.
  • Annual billing is the cheaper route. SaaS CRM Review says a yearly commitment removes 20 percent, saving $36 a year on Standard and $228 on Max for each editor.
  • Max replaced Unlimited. According to SaaS CRM Review, new subscribers have been offered Max since May 29, 2026, and existing Unlimited subscribers moved to Max on September 1, 2026. Reviews that still recommend the Unlimited plan, including Creator Economy Tools, describe a plan new buyers cannot pick.

The free plan is better treated as a trial. Websites2Know notes that its 125 credits are a one-time allowance with no monthly refresh, unlike some rivals that top up free credits every month.

How far the credits go

This is the part that decides whether Runway feels cheap or expensive. The flagship video model costs 12 credits per second of output, and SaaS CRM Review quotes the pricing page as converting 625 credits into 52 seconds of video, 2,250 into 187 seconds and 9,500 into 791 seconds.

In practice, that means Standard buys roughly ten five-second clips a month, a figure Websites2Know also gives, while its Pro calculation works out to about 37 such clips. That sounds fine until you factor in retries. Generative video rarely nails a shot on the first attempt, and every rejected take spends the same credits as the keeper.

Older reviews make the same point with the previous model generation. Creator Economy Tools estimated that a single commercially usable clip often took 5 to 10 variations and that the 625 Standard credits could disappear in an afternoon. Its per-clip prices refer to older models, but the lesson about retries still applies.

Audio is far cheaper than video. SaaS CRM Review lists Seed Audio at 15 credits per minute and text to speech at 1 credit per 50 characters, so voice and sound work barely dents a plan.

Key features

Video generation. Runway's newest model is the headline, and its homepage bills it as its best video model for motion quality and prompt adherence. Per SaaS CRM Review, clips run 2 to 10 seconds at 720p, require Standard or higher, and come in six aspect ratios.

Faster and cheaper models. Gen-4 Turbo is the budget iteration path; SaaS CRM Review lists it at 5 credits per second on the API, along with the Act-Two performance-capture tool. Heavier stylized models cost much more per second.

Reference images and control. Product Hunt reviewers single out the option to use a first frame as a reference to lock in style and mood, and the ability to build a video scene by scene instead of from one long prompt.

Editing tools. Inpainting, motion tracking, background removal and green-screen style tools sit alongside generation. Do not plan to finish projects inside Runway, though: SaaS CRM Review reports that Runway itself says its built-in video editor is no longer actively maintained and recommends a local editor for bigger projects.

Audio. Sound effects, music and text to speech are now part of the suite, so you can rough out a soundtrack without leaving the workspace.

Runway API

Developers use a separate product, Runway Dev, with its own pricing. SaaS CRM Review puts Dev credits at $0.01 each and describes usage tiers that start at 1 concurrent video generation and 50 generations per rolling 24 hours, rising to 20 concurrent generations at the top tier. It also notes that subscription credits on Standard cost close to double the developer rate, which matters if you plan to automate generation at volume.

What owners and reviewers complain about

Runway has a 4.4 rating from 19 reviews on Product Hunt, and the complaints there are consistent:

  • Inconsistent results. Ask for one change and several others shift with it, so users generate multiple versions and pick the best.
  • Prompt adherence. Some reviewers say even the cheaper turbo models ignore much of the prompt despite following the official guide.
  • Speed and queuing on cheaper plans. One Product Hunt reviewer describes relaxed-mode generations taking around 20 minutes for a 10-second clip, with no way to queue jobs.
  • Moderation. Content filters sometimes block harmless prompts, and support around moderation is described as frustrating.

Creator Economy Tools adds that safety filters occasionally reject a prompt while still taking credits, and that keeping the same character consistent across cuts takes effort.

Security & data

The sources we read say little about Runway's data handling, so we will not guess. What they do cover is governance: SaaS CRM Review rates setup as easy for generation but hard for governance, with separate sections on admin controls, enterprise identity and content storage that larger buyers should read before signing. Enterprise plans are negotiated with sales, which is where single sign-on and audit requirements are usually settled. If you handle client footage or likenesses, check Runway's own terms on training rights and storage before uploading.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Realistic, cinematic short clips that work well for b-roll, ads and concepts
  • Several models in one workspace, plus image and audio tools
  • First-frame references and scene-by-scene building give more control
  • Separate API with published credit rates for developers
  • Free allowance to try the output before paying

Cons

  • Credits run out quickly once retries are counted
  • Credits are shared across editors, so teams pay more for the same pool
  • Inconsistent results and weak prompt adherence on some shots
  • Built-in editor is no longer actively maintained
  • Moderation can block benign prompts

Who it's for

Choose Runway if you make short-form video for brands, social or film pre-production and you can afford a plan where retries are part of the budget. Pro is the plan most reviewers point solo creators toward, since Standard's credit pool is tight.

Skip it if you need long continuous scenes, want a full editing suite, run a multi-editor team that expects credits per seat, or only need occasional social clips. Cheaper tools with monthly free credits will serve casual users better.

Alternatives

The rivals reviewers compare Runway with most often are Kling AI, Sora and Luma Dream Machine. None of our sources give current prices for them, so the comparison below is qualitative. If you are weighing several creator subscriptions at once, our MailerLite review shows how we judge price changes on a SaaS plan.

AlternativeStarting priceFree creditsBest for
Kling AINot stated; see Websites2KnowMonthly free creditsBudget creators and image-heavy work
SoraNot stated; see Websites2KnowNot statedText-to-video users already in the OpenAI ecosystem
Luma Dream MachineNot stated; see Creator Economy ToolsNot statedAn alternative look for cinematic shots

Websites2Know suggests using Kling AI as the everyday tool and keeping Runway for hero shots, a sensible split if credit costs are the worry.

Our ratings

Overall: 4/5, because Runway's models produce some of the most convincing short clips available and its pricing is clearly published, but pooled credits, retries and inconsistent results keep real costs high, as SaaS CRM Review and Product Hunt reviewers describe.

Runway

Runway: 4/5. Strong output and a useful API, with Standard starting at $15 a month according to SaaS CRM Review, held back by how fast credits disappear and the lack of a maintained editor.

FAQ

Is Runway free to use?

Partly. The free plan gives a one-time allowance of 125 credits with no monthly refresh, according to Websites2Know. Treat it as a trial to judge the output before choosing a paid plan.

How much does Runway cost in 2026?

SaaS CRM Review lists Standard at $15, Pro at $35 and Max at $95 per editor per month, with 20 percent off for annual billing. Enterprise pricing is quoted by sales.

Do Runway credits expire or roll over?

Monthly plan credits are a monthly allowance, and the free credits are one-time only. Rollover is listed among the extras of the top plan on Websites2Know, which mentions credit rollover of 1 month, so check the current plan card before counting on it.

Can I use Runway videos commercially?

Brands and agencies already use Runway for commercial work; Websites2Know cites an advertising spot made with it. Read Runway's current terms for your plan before publishing client work, especially when real people's likenesses are involved.

Does Runway have an API?

Yes. Runway Dev is a separate API platform with its own credit pricing, which SaaS CRM Review puts at $0.01 per credit, and usage tiers that raise concurrency as you spend more.

Is Runway good for beginners?

Beginners can get impressive clips quickly, but reviewers describe a real learning curve in prompting and in controlling results. Expect to spend credits on practice before output is consistent.

How does Runway compare to Sora?

Both generate video from text, and reviewers rank them among the leading options. Runway's edge is its all-in-one workspace, reference-image controls and a public API; which one looks better depends on the shot, so test both with the same prompt if you can.
