BigCommerce is one of the main alternatives to Shopify for building an online store, and it has a reputation for packing more built-in features into each plan. It is also a platform in transition: the plans were renamed and the sales limits tightened in 2026, so older reviews can mislead you. This BigCommerce review explains what each plan costs today, how the sales caps work, where BigCommerce beats Shopify, and who should look elsewhere.

Short verdict: BigCommerce is a strong choice for growing stores that want lots of features without paying for apps, especially B2B sellers and brands running several storefronts. It charges no extra transaction fees if you use its embedded payment providers. Its weak points are a basic site editor, expensive premium themes and sales caps that can push you to a pricier plan sooner than you expect.

What BigCommerce is

BigCommerce is a hosted e-commerce platform: you pay a monthly fee and get a store builder, hosting, checkout, payments and back-office tools in one account. TechRadar describes it as an online store builder that lets even complete beginners launch a shop, list products and sell worldwide without writing code.

Where it differs from many rivals is depth. Forbes Advisor highlights e-commerce features such as multiple storefronts, multiple inventory locations and tools for selling both retail and wholesale. Those are features other platforms often charge extra for or leave to third-party apps.

The company sells to everyone from new stores to large enterprises. Its home page leads with B2B and B2C selling, product feeds for Google, Meta and TikTok, and a no-credit-card free trial that becomes your real store if you continue.

Pricing

BigCommerce prices its plans by features and by how much you sell. The BigCommerce pricing page, checked on November 1, 2026, lists three self-serve plans, each cheaper when billed yearly.

PlanPrice per monthLimitsFree tier
Core (entry plan)$29 per month billed yearly, $39 month to month (BigCommerce pricing)For new businesses, sales cap appliesNo, free trial only
Growth (mid plan)$79 per month billed yearly, $105 month to month (BigCommerce pricing)For established businesses scaling upNo
Scale (top self-serve plan)$299 per month billed yearly, $399 month to month (BigCommerce pricing)For fast-growing businessesNo

Plan names changed. Older reviews call these plans Standard, Plus and Pro. EcommerceCEO reports that a June restructure introduced the Core, Growth, Scale and Performance names and lowered the sales caps, with Core now capped at $30K and Growth at $100K. Forbes still lists the old names with the same prices, so the change is mainly in naming and limits.

Sales caps are the hidden cost. Each plan comes with a ceiling on how much you can sell before BigCommerce moves you up. EcommerceCEO explains that the measure is your gross order value minus 10%, and that taxes and shipping now count toward it. Map your expected revenue against the caps before you commit, because a good year can trigger an automatic upgrade.

Extra storefronts cost more. The same EcommerceCEO review lists extra storefronts at $30 per month on Core, $50 on Growth and $100 on Scale. Large businesses can move to a custom enterprise plan, which EcommerceCEO puts at $1,499 per month and up.

Themes and apps. Forbes Advisor counts 12 free templates and more than 100 paid ones costing between $150 and $400, which is more than many Shopify themes. Budget for a theme if the free ones do not fit your brand.

Free trial. BigCommerce offers a free trial with no credit card, and your trial store becomes your live store when you pick a plan. PCMag puts the trial at 15 days, slightly longer than Shopify's.

Transaction fees and payments

One of the most common questions is whether BigCommerce takes a cut of your sales. The short answer is no, with a condition. Forbes Advisor says plans include unlimited products and zero transaction fees. EcommerceCEO adds that this now applies when you use one of BigCommerce's embedded payment providers, which include major processors.

You still pay normal card processing fees to your payment provider, as with any platform. The BigCommerce site lists more than 20 embedded payment providers without payment fees and access to more than 130 payment solutions in total, so most stores can find a good fit.

Features that set BigCommerce apart

Multi-storefront selling. TechRadar calls the ability to manage multiple storefronts from one account BigCommerce's standout feature. If you run several brands, regions or wholesale and retail stores, this alone can justify the platform.

B2B and wholesale. Special pricing, bulk discounts and customer-specific deals are built in. TechRadar notes these tools make it easier to win wholesale customers without extra effort.

No limits on products or staff. Every plan includes unlimited products, staff accounts and storage, according to TechRadar, with no bandwidth charges.

Apps and integrations. FluentCart counts around 1,200 verified apps and more than 70 payment gateways, plus an API built for larger stores. You will rely on apps less than on some rivals, but the ecosystem is there when you need it.

Selling everywhere. Product feeds for Google, Meta and TikTok and built-in multi-currency support help stores sell across channels and countries.

Ease of use

BigCommerce is easy to get started with but harder to make beautiful. TechRadar finds the dashboard straightforward for adding products and setting up payments, but says the website editor feels more basic than the drag-and-drop builders on some rival platforms. FluentCart notes that deeper theme customization needs some CSS knowledge.

In practice, that means BigCommerce suits merchants who care most about catalog, checkout and operations, and who are happy with a clean template or willing to hire a designer. If you want to drag elements around freely without touching code, Wix or Squarespace feel friendlier.

Security & data

For an online store, security covers both your data and your customers' card details. FluentCart lists ISO/IEC 27001, SOC 1 and SOC 2 Type 2 certifications and PCI DSS compliance, which means card handling meets payment industry standards. That is a meaningful advantage over self-hosted stores, where you are responsible for security patches yourself.

Reliability matters too. PCMag notes that BigCommerce promises 99.9% uptime, so your store should stay available to customers around the clock.

Customer support

PCMag rates BigCommerce's learning resources as the most extensive among the e-commerce platforms it has tested, with a large knowledge base, webinars, video tutorials, a community forum and a detailed design guide, plus live chat and email support.

User experiences are more mixed. FluentCart summarizes user reviews as raising concerns about pricing, customer support, SEO and platform limits, and one r/ecommerce thread from an agency working on a client store calls BigCommerce one of the worst platforms it has used, despite strong sales results, as the Reddit discussion shows. Treat these as signals to test support during your trial.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • No extra transaction fees with embedded payment providers
  • Multi-storefront and B2B features built in
  • Unlimited products, staff accounts and storage on every plan
  • Strong security certifications and PCI compliance
  • Extensive help resources and a no-credit-card free trial

Cons

  • Sales caps can force upgrades as you grow
  • Premium themes are expensive
  • Site editor is more basic than rivals
  • Extra storefronts and some features cost more on lower plans
  • Mixed user reports on support

Who it's for

Use BigCommerce if you run a growing store with a large catalog, sell wholesale as well as retail, or manage several storefronts. It also suits merchants who want built-in features instead of a long list of paid apps.

Skip BigCommerce if you are just starting with a handful of products and a tight budget, you want the most flexible visual design tools, or your sales are likely to jump past the plan caps quickly and you would rather avoid surprise upgrades.

Forbes compares BigCommerce with Shopify, Wix and Squarespace, and PCMag notes that BigCommerce's pricing roughly matches Shopify's. Our Shopify review covers the main rival in detail.

Marketing tools matter as much as the store itself. If you plan to email customers, our Brevo review covers a budget-friendly option, and our Semrush review looks at a popular SEO tool for growing store traffic.

Is BigCommerce worth it?

Yes, for growing stores that will use what it includes. Multi-storefront selling, B2B tools, unlimited products and no extra transaction fees make it good value once you are past the very first stage. Before you sign up, check the sales cap on your plan against your forecast, budget for a premium theme if needed, and use the free trial to test both the editor and the support team.

Our ratings

Overall: 4/5, because BigCommerce bundles multi-storefront, B2B tools and no extra transaction fees that TechRadar and others praise, held back by sales caps, a basic editor and mixed support reports.

BigCommerce

BigCommerce: 4/5. Feature-rich hosted e-commerce for growing and B2B stores, with plan caps as the main catch, as EcommerceCEO explains.
