Notre note

Standout anime quality, reference consistency and low prices, offset by a no-refund policy, credits lost to failed renders and weak support feedback on Trustpilot.

Comment nous avons noté chaque produit

Vidu is an AI video generator that turns text prompts, still images and reference pictures into short clips, and it has built a following for anime and stylized animation. This Vidu review covers what the tool does well, what the plans and credits really cost, why its user ratings are so split, and which alternatives make more sense if you need longer or more realistic video.

Our verdict in brief

Vidu is a good pick for creators who make short social clips, anime or stylized scenes, and series that need the same character to look consistent from video to video. The free credits and off-peak generation make it cheap to try. Be careful before paying for a large plan, though: the pricing page says refunds are not available, and the negative reviews mostly come from people who could not get their money back or reach support. Start small, learn how credits are spent, and only then move up.

How we researched this review

Simple Life Reviews did not sign up for Vidu or generate videos with it. We read the Vidu reviews from Dupple, AI Test Guide and PicLumen, and compared their findings with Vidu's own homepage and pricing page on the day we published. PicLumen sells a competing AI image and video tool, and its review ends with a comparison to its own product, so we treat its verdict with that in mind. Where a reviewer reports their own use, we attribute it to them.

What is Vidu AI?

Vidu is made by Shengshu Technology, a Beijing startup started by researchers from Tsinghua University, with Baidu and Ant Group among its investors, per Dupple's Vidu review. The same review reports a user base above 10 million spread over 200+ countries and places Vidu between premium tools such as Runway and Sora and the cheaper generators.

The Vidu homepage now presents a broader product family than a single generator: a real-time model, a Vidu App for creating on the go, a set of creative tools, and a Vidu Agent that is meant to help turn one sentence into a finished piece. Testimonials on the homepage come largely from Japanese anime creators, which matches the reputation competitors describe.

How Vidu works

Vidu AI

AI Test Guide describes a simple loop. You pick one of three modes (text, a single image, or several reference images as the starting point); write a prompt or upload images; pick a model, with Q3 for audio-synced storytelling and Q2 or Q1 for quicker, cheaper runs; and generate. Vidu usually returns several variants per run, and you can save characters, props and backgrounds in a "My References" library to reuse them in later videos without uploading them again.

Everything runs in the browser, with no download or graphics card needed. For social content there are also ready-made templates for effects such as Hug and Kiss, which PicLumen's reviewer found need very little setup: upload photos, pick the effect and let the model handle the motion.

Main features of Vidu AI

Multi-Entity Consistency. This is the feature reviewers mention most. Dupple explains that you can give the model 3-7 pictures of the people, props or settings you want, and the clip keeps them looking the same instead of letting faces drift between frames. If you produce a recurring character for a channel, that solves a problem many generators still struggle with.

Anime and stylized output. Dupple and AI Test Guide both single out anime as Vidu's strongest style, with fluid character animation that they rate above Runway and Sora for this look. Realistic human footage is weaker: Dupple notes artifacts with complex movement, overlapping limbs and fast motion.

Synchronized audio. AI Test Guide reports that the flagship Q3 model generates dialogue, lip movement and ambient sound together with the picture in a single 16-second shot, and that Artificial Analysis ranked the Q2 Pro model second or better worldwide, above Runway Gen-4.5, Google's Veo 3.1 and Sora 2 Pro from OpenAI. Benchmark rankings shift often, so treat that as a snapshot.

Resolution and speed. Dupple lists output up to 1080p, generation in roughly 10 seconds per clip, and sound effects at 48kHz, with the older Q1 model producing 5-second clips at 24fps.

What's Vidu AI's maximum video length?

PicLumen gives 16 seconds as the maximum length at the time of its review, depending on the generation mode. That is longer than many rivals per generation, but it is still a short-clip tool: for anything longer, you stitch clips together in an editor, or you look at Kling, which Dupple says offers clips of over 2 minutes.

Pricing

Vidu's pricing page is hard to read. Dupple found that the plan table loads dynamically and shows "Loading pricing plans..." until you create an account, so you cannot compare plans before signing up. Our own snapshot of the page captured prices but not reliably the plan names or billing periods attached to them, so the table separates what we can confirm from what we cannot.

PlanPrice per monthLimitsFree tier
FreeFree (Vidu homepage)A set amount of free credits for every userYes
Standard$10/month (Dupple)800 creditsNo
Ultimate$99/month (Dupple)8,000 credits, up to 200 videos per dayNo
Other current price points$8.25, $35.42, $43, $95.83, $115, $191.67, $230, $425 and $1.01 (Vidu pricing page)Plan names, billing periods and credit amounts not readable in our snapshotNo

The current Vidu pricing page still shows $10 and $99 price points, which match the Standard and Ultimate monthly prices in Dupple's earlier snapshot. Other figures in that snapshot no longer appear: Dupple listed annual billing for Standard that was $8 a month, a Premium plan that was $35/month with 4,000 credits, annual Ultimate billing that was $79 a month, and Enterprise from $1,399/workspace. Check the page after logging in for today's exact names and billing terms.

Other reviewers saw different numbers again. PicLumen describes two options, a Subscription billed monthly or annually and a separate Video Plan for heavier production, with Standard that was $8.50/month and Premium that was $30/month when it wrote its review. Prices on AI video tools change often, so the safest approach is to compare what you see at checkout against the credits you actually need.

How credits work

Every generation spends credits, and the rules decide whether a plan is good value. Dupple reports that subscription credits expire after 30 days, while bought credits and bonus credits last two years. Vidu also lets you earn credits through daily logins and partner programs, and an Off-Peak Mode runs generations without spending credits when the queue is quiet.

Dupple's estimate is roughly 4 credits per standard video, which puts the Standard plan at about 200 videos a month. If you only create occasionally, monthly credits that expire unused are the main way to overpay.

Is Vidu AI free to use?

Yes, to a point. Dupple says the free plan includes 80 credits, enough for roughly 20 standard clips, and off-peak generation without limits, and the Vidu homepage confirms that every user gets free credits. Free off-peak runs are slower, and the paid tiers add high-speed generation and larger allowances.

Refunds, failed renders and support

This is where Vidu's reputation splits. AI Test Guide points out that the pricing page states plainly that refunds are not available, and says that this policy, combined with credits spent on failed renders, drives most of the frustration in user reviews. It recommends shorter, simpler prompts, since long multi-part instructions fail more often and still cost credits.

PicLumen's reviewer reported the opposite on one point: during its session, unsuccessful generations did not consume credits. Policies may differ by mode or have changed, so watch your credit balance on your first few failed runs before assuming either way.

The ratings show the same divide. Dupple cites a G2 score of 4.7 out of 5 across 61 reviews, mostly praising speed and anime quality, against 2.0 out of 5 on Trustpilot for the vidu.studio domain from 11 reviews, with 91% of them 1-star and nearly all about refunds and unresponsive support. AI Test Guide puts the Trustpilot range at 2.0 to 2.8 depending on the domain.

Is Vidu AI safe and legit?

Vidu is a real, well-funded product, not a scam site. AI Test Guide notes its millions of users, public pricing page, documented API, active Discord community and investors including Baidu and Ant Group, and says Stripe handles payments for its ordinary subscriptions.

Security & data

The sources do not document how Vidu stores uploaded images and generated videos, how long it keeps them, or whether your uploads can be used to train its models. Its homepage FAQ mentions safety as a topic, but none of the material we reviewed spells out the policy. If you plan to upload photos of real people, including for the Hug and Kiss templates, read Vidu's privacy policy and terms first, and avoid uploading images of anyone who has not agreed to it.

Two practical points follow from what is documented. Payments go through Stripe rather than a custom checkout, which limits card exposure. And because refunds are not offered, the main financial risk is buying a plan you do not use, not fraud.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Strong anime and stylized animation, rated highly by several reviewers
  • Multi-Entity Consistency keeps characters and objects stable across a clip
  • Free credits and free off-peak generation make testing cheap
  • Synchronized audio and video from the flagship model
  • Ready-made templates for quick social effects such as Hug and Kiss
  • Browser-based, with an API for developers

Cons

  • No refunds, per the pricing page
  • Failed renders can cost credits, according to AI Test Guide
  • Monthly subscription credits expire if unused
  • Pricing is hard to read before you sign up
  • Weak Trustpilot reviews centered on refunds and support
  • Realistic humans and fast motion still show artifacts
  • No public detail in our sources on data retention or training use

Who it's for

Use Vidu if you make short clips for TikTok, Reels or YouTube Shorts, work in anime or stylized looks, or need a recurring character that stays consistent across episodes. It also suits beginners who want to try AI video on free credits before spending money.

Skip it if you need long-form, photorealistic footage with complex human motion, detailed editing control, or a vendor with a flexible refund policy. Anyone who generates video only now and then may find that expiring monthly credits make a pay-as-you-go tool better value.

Alternatives

AlternativeStarting priceStrengthFree tier
RunwayStandard plan $12/month (Dupple)Most creative control and polished stylized output, slowerNot stated in our sources
Sora (via ChatGPT Plus)$20/month (Dupple)Most realistic physics and motion, less parameter controlNo
Kling AIFrom $5/month (Dupple)Best human faces and clips over 2 minutesNot stated in our sources

Vidu's edge over all three is speed, price and anime quality, plus a multi-reference consistency feature that reviewers say rivals do not yet match. Runway is the better choice if you want fine control, Sora if realism matters most, and Kling if you need longer clips or lifelike faces.

Bottom line

Vidu delivers on its niche: fast, affordable short clips with standout anime animation and better character consistency than most rivals. The weak spots are commercial rather than creative: a no-refund policy, credits that expire, prices that are hard to read before signup, and support complaints. Use the free credits and off-peak mode to learn the tool, buy the smallest plan that fits, and you will get good value with little risk.

Our ratings

Overall: 3.5/5, because AI Test Guide and Dupple find standout anime quality, reference consistency and low prices, while the no-refund policy, credits lost to failed renders and poor Trustpilot feedback on support hold it back.

Vidu AI: 3.5/5, because its plans pair a usable free tier with low entry pricing on Dupple's breakdown, but monthly credits expire, plan details are hard to read before signup and refunds are not offered.

FAQ

What is Vidu AI?

It is an AI video generator from Beijing-based Shengshu Technology. It creates short clips from text prompts, still images or several reference images, and it is best known for anime and stylized animation and for keeping characters consistent.

Is Vidu AI worth it?

For short social clips and anime-style work, yes, especially if you start on the free credits. It is less worth it if you need realistic long-form footage or want the safety of a refund, since the pricing page rules refunds out.

Is Vidu AI free to use?

Partly. Every user gets free credits, and reviewers report free off-peak generation as well, so you can make a number of videos without paying. Faster generation and larger monthly allowances require a paid plan.

Does Vidu AI only have a website?

No. Reviewers describe it as a browser tool, but the Vidu homepage also promotes a Vidu App for creating on the go, and AI Test Guide notes a documented API for developers.

Are Vidu's Hug and Kiss templates free?

The Hug and Kiss templates run on credits like other generations, so you can try them with your free credits rather than as a separately free feature. Check the credit cost shown before you generate, since templates may cost more than a basic clip.

What's the maximum video length on Vidu AI?

PicLumen puts the maximum at 16 seconds per generation, depending on the model and mode. For longer videos, you combine several clips in an editor.

Is Vidu AI safe and legit?

Yes, it is a legitimate product from a funded company, with payments handled by Stripe. The main risks are commercial, such as no refunds and expiring credits, and the lack of clear public detail in our sources on how uploads are stored or used.

Is there a free alternative to Vidu?

Most competitors also offer limited free use, but our sources do not document their free tiers in detail. Vidu's own free credits and off-peak mode are one of the more generous ways to try AI video without paying.
